Celebrating an Abundant Oregon

What makes Oregon’s land use planning system different?

In 1973, Oregon voters passed Senate Bill 100, creating our revolutionary land use planning system. For 50 years, it has defined our landscapes and communities – bringing us an Abundant Oregon.

Land use planning is about all the ways we rely on and manage land – for people, housing, agriculture, transportation, recreation, wildlife, and more.

Why is Oregon's visionary land use planning system a national model? It preserves farmland and natural resources by directing urban growth inside cities and towns, and promotes livable communities that protect surrounding wildlife and open spaces.

Thanks to this model, life in Oregon is defined by an abundance of opportunity – more wild lands for exploration and ecology, more agricultural land for local food systems, and more complete communities where everyone can thrive.

Today, we also face a new set of challenges – from addressing the climate crisis to growing sustainably as a region, improving wildfire safety, ensuring water security, protecting wildlife habitat, and more. Fortunately, Oregon’s land use planning system empowers us to face these challenges, giving us all the tools we need to preserve a livable future in Central Oregon and beyond.
