Defending the cold, clear water of the Metolius River Basin
An Outstanding Resource Water Designation
The Metolius River Basin, with its stunning headsprings, ancient forests, and clear blue waters, is a place that captures the imagination and stirs the soul. Beginning at the north base of Black Butte, the river flows northward for roughly 29 miles, where it enters the confluence at Lake Billy Chinook, bringing cold, clear water along with it.
This remarkable area, often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Oregon’s rivers, was once threatened by clear-cut logging and destination resort development. However, thanks in large part to LandWatch’s Founder Paul Dewey and his unwavering defense of the area, it is now protected as an Area of Critical State Concern. Learn more…
Right now, there is an opportunity to designate the Metolius River as an Outstanding Resource Water for Oregon.
The extraordinary value of clear, cold waters
Friends of the Metolius and the Northwest Environmental Defense Center recently submitted a petition to the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission (EQC) to designate the Metolius River, from its headwaters to Monty Campground, as an Outstanding Resource Water.
What is an Outstanding Resource Water?
According to the Department of Environmental Quality, “Outstanding Resource Waters are high-quality waters that constitute an outstanding state resource due to their extraordinary water quality or ecological values, or where special protection is needed to maintain critical habitat areas.”
Designation of the Metolius will prevent degradation of this treasured river and will ensure that the current high water quality and exceptional ecological and recreation values of the Metolius River will be maintained and protected.
Right now, the Department of Environmental Quality is accepting public comments to determine whether they will deny the petition or move ahead and recommend that the Oregon Environmental Quality Commission begin rulemaking proceedings.
Take Action
